The Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) refers to a mandatory safety inspection
program and is not a replacement for the ongoing preventive maintenance carried
out by vehicle owners. An Annual CVIP Inspection is required for all commercial vehicles with a registered gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeding 11,794 kg when operating intra-provincially or with a registered gross vehicle weight (GVW) exceeding 4,500 kg when operating extra-provincially.
If the CVIP expires current Alberta Legislation allows the vehicle to return to
a facility to obtain the inspection. The inspection can be scheduled at any licensed
CVIP facility, not necessarily the closest one. The vehicle cannot stop anywhere
on the way as they must drive only to the inspection facility.
If stopped the following must be provided:
- Phone number of the facility
- Date and time inspection is scheduled
