SK Farm Equipment

There are certain exemptions when moving farm equipment. Farm equipment includes any unit used directly for the purpose of producing agricultural products and includes farm tractors, tillage, seeding, spraying, harvesting, hay making, feed processing, livestock feeding and handling, and manure spreading equipment. It does not include items used for shelter or storage of agricultural products such as grain bins, hopper bottoms and livestock shelters.

Permits Required
A permit is required for farm equipment when the equipment is being towed or is self-propelled
  • On a designated highway and protrudes into the oncoming lane for a two lane highway
  • On a designated highway and protrudes into the passing lane for a four lane highway or
  • At night on a non-designated highway

A permit is required when farm equipment is loaded on a vehicle or dollies on Provincial highways exceeding legal width of 2.6 meters. The designated highways can be found in the fact sheet below. All other highways are Non-designated highways.

Permits Not Required
A permit is not required when the farm equipment is on a Municipal Road, and does not enter the Provincial highway system and when it is being towed behind a vehicle that is self propelled on a non-designated provincial highway during daylight hours.

Note: Municipalities may have a by-law in place that requires farm equipment to obtain permits before travelling on their roads. It is important to check if a permit is required before travelling on any Municipal Roadways.

  • After 3pm on Fridays beginning the Friday before Victoria Day in May and ending on Labour Day in September
