AB Over Dimension Loads



When a load exceeds legal dimensions a permit is required and, depending on the dimensions, certain conditions must be followed. Legal Dimensions in Alberta are:

  • 2.6m

Height
  • 4.15m

Length
  • Single Vehicle - 12.5m
  • Truck-Tractor and Semi-Trailer - 23.0m
  • A and C Train Combinations - 26.0m
  • B Train Combinations - 27.5m

Conditions for Movement

Over 8'7" wide (2.60m)
  • Flags by day
  • Warning lights by night

Over 10' wide (3.05m)
  • As above PLUS 2 dimensional signs

Over 11' wide (3.35m)
  • As above PLUS 1 or more flashing lights

Over 12'7" wide (3.85m)
  • As above PLUS
  • 1 pilot vehicle
    • behind - 4-lane
    • front - 2-lane
  • No movement after 3:00 p.m. on day preceding weekend or a Stat
  • No movement on Sunday or Stat. holiday

Over 14'7" wide (4.45m)
  • As above PLUS
  • On 2-lane 1 pilot and 1 trail vehicle
  • On 4-lane
    • up to 18' (5.49m) needs 1 trail vehicle
    • over 18' (5.49m) needs 1 pilot and 1 trail vehicle
  • No movement after 3:00pm on day preceding weekend or stat. holiday
  • No movement on Sunday or stat. holiday
  • DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY

Over 24' wide (7.32m)
  • 3 Escort Vehicles Required
  • Must not detain School buses
  • Notify RCMP
  • No convoys

Over 17'4" high (5.30m)
  • Notify power and telephone
  • DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY
