SK Over Dimensional Loads


When a load exceeds legal dimensions a permit is required and, depending on the dimensions, certain conditions must be followed. In addition to obtaining a permit when exceeding legal dimensions, there are general conditions and restrictions that must be followed depending on the size of your load.
Legal Dimensions in Saskatchewan are:


Width
  • 2.6M (8’6”)
Height
  • 4.15M (13’6”)
Length
  • Single Vehicle, 12.5M (41’)
  • Single Vehicle w/Tandem steer tridrive, 14.0 M (45’9”)
  • Truck Tractor, semi-trailer(s) combination 23M (75’5”)
  • Tridrive truck tractor and semi-trailer(s) combination 23.5M (77’)


Single trip and term permits are available for vehicles exceeding legal dimensions. Term permits are available for dimensions up to 3.85 meters wide, 5.18 meters high and 31 meters long. They are issued to individual vehicles. The information required to obtain a dimension term permit is:

  • A copy of the vehicle’s registration
  • The front page of the previous year’s term permit (if applicable)
  • The actual dimensions



CONDITIONS FOR WIDTH



Over 8’7” Wide (2.60M) - Flags by Day.     - Lights by night.
Over 10’ Wide (3.05M) - Same as above plus 2 Dimensional signs and a flashing amber beacon at night.
Over 12’7” Wide (3.85M) - Same as above Plus Two Pilot vehicles at night one behind and one in front. Follow Holiday hours.
Over 14’7” Wide (4.45M) - Same as above Plus One Pilot vehicle on a two lane, One Trail vehicle on a four lane. Daylight hours only.



TRAVEL TIME/DAY RESTRICTIONS



Travel Restrictions: (unless otherwise specified on the permit)
  • No travel when exceeding 3.05M (10’) width and/or exceeding 25M long when visibility is reduced to less than 1000 M or when highways are slippery
  • Direct crossing of a provincial Highway is allowed on Sundays and Public Holidays if a flag person is in attendance during the crossing
  • Travel for over dimension loads is subject to structural clearance on provincial highways

Night Travel (Sunset to Sunrise)
  • 4.45 M (14.60 ft.) maximum width and/or 42 M Maximum length
  • Loads over 3.85 M require both a lead and trail escort vehicle on all highways
  • 5.18 M maximum height

Fridays:
  • Friday restrictions apply from the Friday prior to Victory Day (May) until Labour Day (Sept)
  • No restrictions before 3:00 PM
  • 3.85M Maximum width and/or 42m maximum length after 3:00 PM
  • Rear effective overhang cannot exceed 9 M

Sundays:
  • Sunday restrictions apply all year
  • No restrictions before 12:00 PM
  • 3.85 M (12.63 ft.) maximum width and/or 42 M maximum length after 12:00 PM
  • Rear effective overhang cannot exceed 9 M

Day prior to a public holidays include December 24, 27 and 31
  • No restrictions before 12:00 PM
  • 3.85 M maximum width and/or 42 M maximum length after 12:00 PM
  • Rear effective overhang cannot exceed 9M

Day prior to a public holiday
  • If a public holiday falls on a day other than Monday, travel is restricted on the day prior to a public holiday as follows
    • No restrictions before 3:00 PM
    • 3.85 M maximum width and/or 42 M maximum length after 3:00 PM
  • If a holiday falls on a Monday, Sunday restrictions apply
