Over Dimensional Loads

When a load exceeds legal dimensions a permit is required and, depending on the dimensions, certain conditions must be followed. In addition to obtain a permit when exceeding legal dimensions, there are general conditions and restrictions that must be followed depending on the size of your load.

INTERNAL DIMENSIONS

The internal dimensions include the King Pin Setback, Trailer Wheelbase, Effective Rear Overhang and Box length. The internal dimensions only apply to the trailer and the point at which the trailer connects whether it is to a truck itself or to a jeep.

A registration and fuel tax permit is typically required for commercial vehicles weighing and registered for 11,794 KGS or greater when moving in Saskatchewan if that vehicle is not Saskatchewan plated.

OVERWEIGHT VEHICLES

Axle weights are divided into multiple Legal Weights; and a single set of Max weight for their Primary Highways and Secondary/Grid roads. Permits are required when exceeding legal weights for the specific road classifications being used or when below legal axle weights; but exceeding Gross Vehicle Weight of 49,000 Kgs on Secondary/Grid Roads and 53,500 Kgs on Primary Roads.

MASSIVE MOVES

Massive moves are defined as a load that has a gross vehicle weight in excess of 120,000kgs. Approval from the Rural Municipality must be in place before SGI will issue a provincial permit.

SPRING RESTRICTIONS

To help protect roadway infrastructure throughout the province, blanket spring restrictions can be placed on roadways. Typically, spring road restrictions start the first week of March and they may be in place for up to six weeks. Unless additional approval is received from the Rural Municipality, you will need to meet set weights allowed during Spring Restrictions.

BRIDGE BRANCH APPROVAL

When the weight of a move exceeds specific maximums, a review by the engineering department is triggered. Engineer approval can only be obtained Monday to Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm. Any applications not received before 3pm may not be completed until the next business day
